Bryn Mawr is a lively place to reside, with a lot to offer; there’s never a shortage of things to do, if you’re feeling up to it! There are coffee shops, multi-ethnic restaurants, and a range of retail shops offering everything from clothing to handicrafts.  The Clover Market is a Saturday Farmers Market that takes place across from the train station weekly from May to November.

Alternatively, if you’re looking for solitude, an excellent location is the historic Ludington Library.

Some of the best private schools in the region, including The Baldwin School, The Agnes Irwin School (both all girls schools), The Shipley School (co-ed), Sacred Heart Academy, and Barrack Hebrew Academy. Harriton High School, one of two public high schools in the Lower Merion School District, was declared a “Blue Ribbon School" by the state of Pennsylvania and the United States Department of Education. Croche (musician), Jayne Mansfield (actress), Teddy Pendergrast (singer), President Woodrow Wilson (taught government at Bryn Mawr College), among many others.

    The History of Bryn Mawr

Prior to investing in Bryn Mawr real estate, familiarize with the history of this attractive community, since its past is part of what gives Bryn Mawr its current charm.

The area was included in the land charter that was given to William Penn by King Charles II in an effort to settle an outstanding debt between the King and William Penn’s father, admiral and politician Sir William Penn. He went on to become one of the pioneers of colonial unification, and the colony he founded, Pennsylvania.

In 1683, another Quaker by the name of Rowland Ellis bought 800 acres from Penn and named his land after his former homestead in England, which was Bryn Mawr (meaning “Great Hill” in Welsh).

In 1832, the Philadelphia & Columbia Railway constructed its "Main Line" between Philadelphia and Lancaster, Pennsylvania, with a station located in Humphreyville that became the town of Bryn Mawr. Humphreyville had just 21 dwellings at the time, but the introduction of the railroad brought more visitors to the area, and more families moved there from Philadelphia.

    Local Amenities

Bryn Mawr real estate is even more desirable when potential homebuyers consider the multitude of services and facilities that will be available to them.

Below are just a few of the well-known local amenities Bryn Mawr has to offer:

    1. Bryn Mawr College

Bryn Mawr College is a prestigious women’s liberal arts school (the graduate school is co-ed). Originally founded as a Quaker institution in 1885, Bryn Mawr College is one of the Seven Sister colleges and Tri-College Consortium and hosts nearly 1,800 undergraduate and graduate students. Bryn Mawr College was the first women's college to offer graduate education through a PhD. Some distinguished alumni: Katharine Hepburn and Edith Hamilton.
The Wyndham House, a hidden gem on the Bryn Mawr campus, was built in 1796 as a formal fieldstone farmhouse and features many original and period furnishings. It now serves as the Alumnae House for Bryn Mawr College and as a Bed & Breakfast Inn. Its guests have included Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and Gloria Steinem, among many others. The Wyndham House is open to the public (lunch only), Monday through Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

    2. Bryn Mawr Film Institute

Bryn Mawr Film Institute, a non-profit organization, purchased the historic Seville Theater in 2002. The Seville Theater, also known as the Bryn Mawr Theatre, is an ornate, historic theater building built in 1926; it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.  The Institute embarked on a 10-year renovation and expansion project, and now offers an eclectic mix of independent, international, documentary, alternative, classic, and new films throughout the year, along with movie screenings, special events, guest speakers, film courses, and interactive programs, to create a film community.

    3. Harriton House

Harriton House, an historic house in Bryn Mawr, was the residence of Charles Thomson, the secretary of the Continental Congress. It was originally built in 1704 by Rowland Ellis, a Welsh Quaker, and was called Bryn Mawr, meaning “high hill.” The National Register of Historic Places has it listed under the original name. Tours of Harriton House are available Wednesday through Saturday, from 10:00am to 4:00pm by appointment only; the grounds of the park are free and open to the public daily and include visits to the park’s barn animals.
Harriton House conducts numerous fairs and courses throughout the year, including Autumn Apple Tasting, Annual Beekeeping and Honey Festival, beekeeping courses, Dairy Days Ice Cream Social, Bookbinding Workshop Series, Annual Farmstead Fair, community gardening, Annual Epicurean Extravaganza, Beginning Blacksmithing, and Summer Camp, among others.

    4. Bryn Mawr Hospital

Homes for Sale in Bryn Mawr, PA

Due to the high demand for properties, homebuyers have to move quickly, if they want to buy a Bryn Mawr home that is on the market. Those interested in purchasing will undoubtedly fall in love with the local Bryn Mawr homes for sale listings, since Bryn Mawr has a wide range of styles to choose from.
Below are a few of our favorite local architectural styles:

    Colonials

Colonial houses are built in a traditional style of architecture that dates back to the U.S. Colonial era, which ended in the late 1800’s. Their basic framework has remained an extremely popular influence in residential architecture for over 200 years in the United States. The traditional Colonial-style home is rectangular and symmetrical. The front door is centered and is usually crowned with a small pediment or columned portico. There are an equal number of tall windows on each side of the front door, and double-hung sash windows are symmetrically arranged around the house, normally installed in pairs. The front door opens to a formal entryway with a central staircase, with access to large, ground-floor rooms on either side. There is a central fireplace (which was moved to exterior walls in later eras). On the second story, the central staircase leads to upper bedrooms, often four, which branch off from a central hallway, and at least one bathroom. The layout of Colonial homes creates plenty of space for large families, including finished basements and recreational rooms. Colonials have sloping, medium-pitched gabled roofs with shingles and gutters. The exterior of the home is brick, wood, or vinyl siding.

Although the Colonials period ended in the late 1800s, the late 1800s brought the Colonial Revival and a resurgence in Colonial-style architecture, that laid the foundation for modern Colonial homes. The revival is commonly credited to the Philadelphia Centennial of 1876, which was the first World's Fair to be held in America, celebrating the 100-year anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. As a result, the Colonial home style has remained an extremely popular influence in residential architecture along the Philadelphia Main Line, and there are many stately Colonial-style homes in Bryn Mawr, as well as in many other communities of the Philadelphia Main Line, including Merion Station, Narberth, Wynnewood, Ardmore, Gladwyne, Haverford, Villanova, and Wayne.

If you’re looking for a home that provides you with plenty of space for large families, we recommend checking out Colonial homes for sale in Bryn Mawr, PA.

    Dutch Colonials

Dutch Colonials are a subset of Colonial style homes. These properties offer a traditional appeal that is unmatched by other designs. When you purchase one, you are buying a piece of American history. Hallmark features like dormer windows, gambrel roofs, and brick chimneys make these homes discernibly unique and classically captivating. Thus, they are considered the cream of the crop when it comes to Bryn Mawr, PA real estate.

    Traditional Manors

Traditional is a broad term encompassing many styles, including Colonial. These houses for sale in Bryn Mawr, PA  and properties combine old-world charm, updated with modern amenities. Modern architectural features like clean lines and bright, airy interiors are used in unison with more traditional components, including ornate trim, brick or stone exteriors, and hipped roofs.

If you’re looking for a place that provides you with all of the present-day conveniences you’ve become accustomed to, without compromising on old country charm, we recommend checking out Traditional homes for sale in Bryn Mawr, PA.
