The initial group of 40 Quakers who settled in Radnor purchased the land from William Penn in 1682 and named it Radnor (“Red Earth” in Welsh), after their native Radnorshire, Wales. In 1717, the group erected a meeting house, which went on to serve as the center of town for more than 200 years. In 1832, the Pennsylvania Railroad was constructed and ran through the town, bringing travelers to the area and generating more economic growth.
