Even before the area was settled by Quakers in 1663, it was the homestead of the Lenni Lenape Indians— one of the earliest northeastern nations on human record— who travelled the Great Lakes using birch bark canoes and lived in longhouses made from wood, grass and bark.
The initial group of 40 Quakers who settled in Radnor purchased the land from William Penn in 1682 and named it Radnor (“Red Earth” in Welsh), after their native Radnorshire, Wales. In 1717, the group erected a meeting house, which went on to serve as the center of town for more than 200 years. In 1832, the Pennsylvania Railroad was constructed and ran through the town, bringing travelers to the area and generating more economic growth.
In 1901, the town was officially incorporated and formed its own government. In the years after World War II, it experienced significant growth.
