Wayne is one of several communities that comprise the Main Line region— a prominent and affluent group of Philadelphia suburbs. Wayne, itself, has never been officially incorporated as a town, but those who live in the community consider it to be a distinct borough, proudly citing the town’s ZIP code.
Like the majority of the communities in the Main Line region, Wayne is a thriving town where many of Pennsylvania’s wealthiest and most successful citizens choose to raise their families and settle into a comfortable suburban lifestyle.
More specifically, the median household income in Wayne is $128,812— a figure that is more than double the national average of $57,000.
The lifestyle in Wayne is reflective of these statistics. From state-of-the-art amenities to immaculately manicured lawns and modern, refined restaurants— everything is Wayne is an endeavor to be the best of the best.
In order to truly appreciate the historic homes for sale in Wayne, PA, it is helpful to become acquainted with the area’s prolific and chronicled past.
It began in 1882 when the Pennsylvania Railroad constructed Cleaver’s Landing, a rail stop that was later renamed the Wayne Station in honor of General Anthony Wayne. The introduction of the station increased the demand for nearby real estate and many well-to-do businessmen began purchasing lots in the area, including Anthony Joseph Drexel and G.W. Childs.
In time, commercial projects began to emerge in the village, including the Wayne Hotel, resulting in a population rise as people began settling in the area for work.
Wayne real estate becomes even more desirable when potential homebuyers consider the plethora of services and facilities that will be available to them.
Below are just a few of the most celebrated local amenities Wayne has to offer:
The Anthony Wayne Theatre is a longstanding local landmark. Built in 1928, it was originally a single, 1,600-seater auditorium equipped with a large, illuminated marquee and goldfish ponds in the main lobby. The first picture shown at the theatre was Old San Francisco, a silent black-and-white film starring Delores Costello and Warner Oland. Today, the theatre plays popular major motion pictures and has been expanded to include five auditoriums so multiple films can be shown at once.
Very few natural retreats offer the degree of beauty and diversity of plant species that Chanticleer Garden possesses. This lush, flowering estate was established in 1912 by Christine Penrose and Adolph G. Rosengarten, who passed the property onto their son, Adolph G Rosengarten Jr. It was Adolph Jr. who had the idea to transform the estate into a public garden. He hired British gardener Christopher Woods to conceptualize and develop the grounds, who went on to travel the world establishing upper-echelon gardens. Woods even published a widely-acclaimed book, Gardenlust: A Botanical Tour of the World’s Best New Gardens, that documented his horticultural adventures. Chanticleer, however, was his first major project and remains a marvel for gardening enthusiasts and novice visitors alike.
This historic treasure is a local hidden gem. The one-story stone structure is one of the oldest buildings in the Main Line region, dating back to 1765. The school was constructed by Jacob Sharraden—a German Quaker and wealthy grist mill owner— who wanted to invest in the village and its people. The schoolhouse was accompanied by a church and, eventually, a graveyard. Children who attended the school were educated until the age of 12 and were required to pay an enrollment fee of 3 cents per day.
If you are considering investing in Wayne, PA real estate, the Old Eagle School is an absolute must-see.
Every home is unique, but this is especially true when it comes to houses for sale in Wayne, PA. As one of Pennsylvania’s wealthiest suburbs, Wayne attracts residents who are looking for high-end, custom-built homes that are anything but ordinary.
If you’re committed to living along the Main Line, Wayne, PA is one of the most prestigious locations in the entire region.
You’ll find extraordinary estates in a spectrum of styles, including:
These spacious, rectangular homes typically have just one floor (although some have basement levels). This means easy access to outdoor areas and stair-free indoor living. They also often feature open-concept living spaces, expansive backyard patios, and large-scale Bay windows that welcome in a ton of natural light.
Traditional-style homes are ideal for homebuyers who prefer designated spaces as opposed to wide-open, multi-functional rooms. They offer taller, pointed roofs, covered front porches, and grand entryways, among other desirable features.
These homes are a hallmark of Pennsylvania living. Their historic charm is made evident by their classic characteristics, including symmetrical square or rectangular structural designs, pitched roofs, and centred front doors.
